We are responding to the invitation of the Presbyterian Church USA to be a part of the Matthew 25 movement helping our denomination become a more relevant presence worldwide by focusing on Matthew 25: 31-46, the parable of the sheep and goats in which Jesus makes clear that what we do matters to God and how we treat others is important to God. As a result, we are centering our mission and vision around building congregational vitality, dismantling structural racism, eradicating systemic poverty, caring for the earth, and promoting gender justice. Keep reading to learn about some of the ways we are living this vision.
Our congregation's Stephen Ministry equips laypeople to provide one-to-one confidential Christian care to people who are experiencing difficulties in their lives. Trained Stephen Ministers can provide the emotional and spiritual care we need when faced with a crisis or life challenge. "No one should have to suffer alone. It's an abomination." (Rev. Kenneth Haugk, founder of Stephen Ministries "Bear one another's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ." (Galatians 6:2)
Our governing board formally endorses the mission statement of More Light Presbyterians: “to center and celebrate the lives, gifts, and leadership of LGBTQIA+ people in the Presbyterian Church (USA) and beyond. We accomplish this by igniting the prophetic witness of our ministry partners and by cultivating relationships rooted in mutual accountability and care. Together, we journey toward God's promised liberation and flourishing for all creation.” Similarly, we have been approved by Gaychurch.org and certified by the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point Center for Inclusive Teaching and Learning as a Safe Zone organization. We perform same gender weddings and welcome leadership and staff from the LGBTQIA+ community.
Presbyterian Church (USA): For more than 200 years, U.S. Presbyterians have responded to the call of Jesus Christ by proclaiming and living out our faith, laboring with love and energy to promote God’s justice in the world.
We are one of the first ten churches in the country to be recognized by the PCUSA with this designation for our commitment to Earth Care in our worship, education, facilities, and outreach. For many years now, the PCUSA has continued to designate us as an Earth Care congregation for making creation care a central concern of our church. Because we acknowledge our sacred duty to be stewards of God's good Earth, and since human-caused climate change is a crisis threatening all of creation, we have declared ourselves to be a climate congregation, working to avoid the worst impacts of climate change here in our community and all around the globe.
